R) Lyttelton Railway Station Signal Box

Turn right back onto Norwich Quay and you will see the signal box on your right.  It is an original 19th century building with 1935 equipment.

Although built to a standard design, it was one of only 11 signal boxes still working by 1986.

It was closed in 1991 and subsequently moved to its current location to protect it due to it’s historical and cultural significance to Lyttelton’s port and rail history.

The picture shows its original location next to the railway line.
