Walk a little further and turn right (before Sutton Quay) and you will find this memorial stone.

The rock’s location marks the spot where the first Canterbury Settlers stepped foot on New Zealand soil in 1850.  Due to land reclamation by the Port, the stone does not sit at the waters’ edge, giving you an indication of how much the Port has developed since these early days.  Each December 16th, the Canterbury Pilgrims & Early Settlers Association Inc. re enacts the pilgrims’ arrival with a small ceremony.

If you walk beyond Pilgrims Rock you will see a mural which is also dedicated to the brave settlers who travelled in atrocious conditions to make a new life on the other side of the world.
