S) London Street
London street has always been the main shopping street for the township.
The great fire of 1870 and the earthquakes of 2010-11 had a significant impact on the street and many historic buildings were lost. Despite this, rebuilding has begun.
The Empire Hotel built-in 1902 once stood on the corner and housed a dairy which was internationally known for its large icecreams. however damage caused during the earthquakes brought an end to the last remaining historic hotel in Lyttelton.
Wander along the street and take in the street's ambiance. Be sure to look for the old trading buildings that have been transformed into local crafts and produce shops.
